US 101 North of Coos Bay, Oregon

This trip’s final day began as I headed out of the Coos Bay/North Bend area on US 101.  Thankfully, the weather was wonderful–much better than when I passed through this area on Day 2.  As you’re headed out of North Bend, check out the funky old neon sign above the highway.  If I had remembered that it was there, I would have taken a picture at night–assuming it’s still lit.

A little further up the road is the Umpqua River Lighthouse.  I took this picture from the viewpoint at the side of US 101.  Trust me, it’s a lot less scenic up close; just enjoy the view from here, and move on.

After driving by the sand dunes near Florence (which mostly block any views of the Pacific from the highway), I began to feel like I hadn’t stopped at a beach for a while, so I gave Heceta Beach a try.  It wasn’t very exciting.  This is the view north, and somewhere in all that sea fog is Heceta Head and our next stop, Sea Lion Caves.
