Vermont’s capitol city is the smallest in the nation, but it still has a stately capitol building. The Vermont State House is on the north side of the Winooski River, and just off Interstate 89 on State Street.
I only had time to admire the state house from the outside, before continuing my drive towards New Hampshire.
This is Vermont’s third state house. The original was a wood-framed structure that was quickly outdated, and the second one burned (in 1857). Only the front portico survived the fire, and it was incorporated into the new building, which was dedicated in 1859.
From Montpelier, take US 2 and US 302 east to the New Hampshire state line, then NH Rte. 112 across the Granite State to North Conway.
