Cleveland, Georgia

After a long drive north out of Florida, and a restful night in Gainesville, Georgia, I was destined for the mountains, and the charming tourist-trap town of Helen on Day 2.  Along the way, I passed through another nice little town, Cleveland, Georgia.

As the county seat of White County, Cleveland has a stately old courthouse in the middle of town.  If you’re driving through, you’ll have to navigate around it.

You could also stop at the collection of downtown stores that surround Courthouse Square.

The goal of this trip was to see some autumn leaves.  This wasn’t exactly what I had in mind, but more fall foliage was just up the road!

If you’re headed to Helen, Georgia, continue north on US 129 for just a few blocks beyond the courthouse.  Watch for GA 75, Helen Highway, to turn to the right.  Highway 75 will take you into Helen.

Did you get swept up in the Cabbage Patch Kids mania of the 1980’s?  Are you still a little crazy for those cute dolls?  Then you’ll fit right in, in Cleveland, Georgia.  The town is home to “Babyland General Hospital” — the place where Cabbage Patch Kids are born.  The “hospital” moved out of its humble home and into an expansive new building recently, on the north side of town.  Admission is free but, come on, you’re not going to leave without buying a doll.
