Trip to Alaska Reasons: #4 – Alaska’s Scenic Drives.
You could argue that the Pacific Coast Highway in California or US 101 in Oregon is America’s most scenic road, or perhaps the drive past the Tetons or the Beartooth Highway into Yellowstone. But Alaska’s scenic drives are something special. The state has very few roads, but each one could be a contender for the title.
The Seward Highway, just south of Anchorage, is a favorite. For miles, this road hugs the edge of Turnagain Arm, with mountain peaks rising on either side of the inlet. Continue south, and you cross onto the Kenai Peninsula, and eventually arrive in Seward. Untouched mountains surround you the entire way.
Heading east from Anchorage, the Glenn Highway passes the awe-inspiring Matanuska Glacier, then squeezes past Lion’s Head, before eventually making a bee-line towards the mountains of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.
And then there’s Alaska Route 8, the Denali Highway, which is in a class by itself.
