If you’re headed towards the Cascades, and hoping to spend a day in North Cascades National Park, you’ll be driving out Washington Route 20 from I-5. And along the way, the last decent-sized town you’ll encounter is Sedro-Woolley.
Sedro-Woolley probably deserves more time than I devoted to it. It has a nice, walkable downtown district, with sidewalks lit with fancy light posts, and plenty of storefronts that are still in business. I stopped for a picture, then kept going. With the clouds and rain that were plaguing the Washington coast, I was hopeful that the weather would break, further east (which it did). So, I will have to save Sedro-Woolley for another time.
Sedro-Woolley derived its unusual name from the combination of two towns: Sedro, a name derived from the Spanish word for Cedar, and Woolley, for Philip A. Woolley, a railroad developer.
