The Glacier & Hi-Line Trip

11 Days, Mostly in Montana

This trip begins and ends in Salt Lake City, but focuses much of its time on Glacier National Park in northwestern Montana. After several days of hiking in Glacier, I headed east along the Hi-Line, US 2, before swinging back to Salt Lake City via the Beartooth Highway and Yellowstone National Park.

Day 1

Driving North from Salt Lake City

The first day of this trip took me from Salt Lake City, through Idaho, into Montana. I ended the day at Butte, Montana.

Day 2

Continuing north towards Glacier National Park

I saw a ghost town and took a nice scenic drive on this day, as I headed north towards Glacier National Park.

Day 3

The Big Hike in Glacier National Park

This day was all about completing one very big hike: the Highline - Loop trail, from Logan Pass in Glacier National Park. I finished the day with a nice sunset at Logan Pass.

Day 4

Glacier's East Side

I used this day to rest my feet with some easier hikes and exploring on Glacier National Park's east side. Then, I stayed up late for some stargazing.

Day 5

Spotting Waterfalls and Wildlife in Glacier

I devoted this day to a leisurely hike that took me to three of Glacier's most beautiful waterfalls.

Day 6

Hitting the Hi-Line

I started the day with one final hike in Glacier National Park, then I headed east on the Hi-line, US 2, for as far as I could go.

Day 7

More of the Hi-Line, then south to Billings

This day covered some very wide-open and empty expanses of land. I drove east on the Hi-Line, then south on US 191, cutting across Montana, to end the day with a nice (but smoky) sunset in Billings.

Day 8

Onto the Beartooth Highway

I headed up the Beartooth Highway to my overnight stop at the Top of the World Store, then spent the rest of the day exploring the scenery along the Beartooth.

Day 9

The Beartooth Highway & Chief Joseph Byway

I did some hiking and exploring along the Beartooth Highway, then drove out-and-back on the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway, before finishing my day at Cooke City, Montana.

Day 10

It's all about Yellowstone (and the Tetons)

I fought the crowds in Yellowstone and still managed to see many of the park's biggest attractions, then drove down to the west side of the Tetons for sunset.

Day 11

Back to Salt Lake City

This day brought the trip to an end with a long drive back to Salt Lake City, with just one meaningful stop, in Pocatello, Idaho.
