Escape to Canada, Option #3: Saint John, New Brunswick

0

New Brunswick offers several great cities that are big enough to provide everything you need, without feeling overwhelmingly large.  If that’s what you’re looking for, as you move to Canada from the U.S., you might want to try Saint John on for size.

This beautiful town is on the coast of the Bay of Fundy, at the outlet of the Saint John River.  Those giant letters on the hillside above the city leave little doubt as to your location.  Plunge into downtown…

… and you’ll find this charming park, King’s Square, at the heart of things.  It’s surrounded by the Imperial Theater, numerous restaurants and businesses…

… and the Saint John City Market.  This is the oldest continuously operated farmer’s market in Canada.  It’s been in operation since 1785, with the current building dating back to 1876.  Some of the businesses have been in operation for more than 100 years.

From the market, you can walk down to the waterfront through tubes that connect the buildings — no need to go outside on cold winter days.  If you do step outside, you’ll find a nice waterfront, complete with some unusual residents, depicted in these sculptures that are located around town.

Before we leave New Brunswick, let’s check out another nice little city, Fredericton.

What do you think?  Would Saint John make a good place to live?  Did I miss a great Canadian town that should be on the list?  Want to yell at me about the results of the election? Hey, that’s what the internet is for!  Throw in your two cents in the comments below.
