Rod’s Steak House is world famous, and receives glowing praise in one of my favorite road trip books, the appropriately titled “Road Trip USA”. That was enough of an excuse for me to stop.
Rod’s dining room has a unique feeling. It’s like a time capsule of sorts, taking you back to 66’s heyday. The menu comes in the shape of a steer, the tee-shirts are affordable, and the sugar-dipped steak is the perfect end to a day on the road.
The Grand Canyon is still a good hour’s drive away, and I made the rest of the trip in darkness.
You can spend the night at one of several motels in Williams, or head on up AZ-64 to the Grand Canyon. There are a number of places to stay in Tusayan, just outside the park gates. You can find a good bargain on a motel room inside the park, if you plan ahead. But arriving after dark can be difficult: there are virtually no street lights inside the park.
