A system of locks and dams make the Muskingum River passable to boats. The locks are manually operated and make for an interesting stop.
When you reach Waterford (different than Watertown!) turn on to Ohio Rte. 60, headed north. Between Malta and Zanesville the road parallels the Muskingum River.
This is the view below the locks. When a boat enters from the north, the gates close, and the water levels slowly drop, until the lower gates can be opened. Reversing the process allows north-bound boat traffic to pass.
The Muskingum River lock and dam system dates back to the mid-1800’s.
In Zanesville, watch for a bridge that has not two, but threeends. It’s known as the famous “Y” bridge, and it carries US Rte. 40, the old National Road.
