Little Colorado River Canyon, in the Navajo Nation

0

I first visited this miniature Grand Canyon, when I was about 12 years old.  Back then, my father broke the eerie silence with an unanticipated shout of “Echo! Echo!”  His words reflected back, and by the time we left, everyone was shouting.

The canyon hasn’t changed much since then, and the echo still works, too.

Native Americans in this area came up with a great way to sell their jewelry and trinkets.  In order to reach the viewpoint, you must walk down a long row of flea-market style booths, all stocked  with turquoise and beads.

I spent more time in the Navajo Nation during my 5 Days, 4 Corners Trip in 2006.

Note: This trip was first published in 2004.
