Winter Hikes: 6: Maligne Canyon Ice Walk

0

Most hikes in this list avoid snow and ice, but this one is possible because of it.  During the summer months, Maligne Canyon is deep, narrow, and impassable, thanks to rushing water at the bottom.  But in winter, that creek freezes, allowing you to hike upstream, on the ice!  You’ll get to see some amazing ice sculptures on the cliffs, and experience a chilly solitude.  And best of all, you don’t have to pay a guide to take you there!

Location

From Jasper, Alberta, drive north on Highway 16, then turn on Maligne Lake Road.  Watch for a restaurant and gift shop, and parking area at Maligne Canyon. Begin the hike from there.
