Let’s talk about one more icy hike before returning to a warmer climate. Just like Maligne Canyon, the creek at Grotto Canyon freezes solid during winter. You can easily hike on the ice up the canyon to a beautiful frozen waterfall, then turn around and hike back, enjoying a few out of the canyon into the Bow River Valley.
Location
Grotto Canyon trailhead is outside of Banff National Park, near Canmore. Pass the Baymag plant on Route 1A, then watch for Grotto Mountain Pond on the left, and a road that leads to a parking area at the trailhead.
