Winter Hikes: 4: Camelback Mountain, Phoenix

0

If you hiked Piestewa Peak in Phoenix, and you have any energy remaining, you can tackle another great mountain in the middle of the city.  Camelback Mountain is an iconic landmark in Phoenix, and the hike to the top is frequented by locals who stay in great shape by navigating the rocky slope on a regular basis.  Wintertime is the best time for this hike, to avoid miserably high temperatures.

Location

The Echo Canyon Trail begins on the mountain’s northwest side.  From Camelback Road, take 44th Street north.  It will curve, and become McDonald Drive.  When it curves again, make a right to stay on McDonald, then watch for the turnoff to the Echo Canyon Recreation Area.
