As I drove towards Fredericksburg, Texas, heading south on FM 965, I spotted a sign for “Cross Mountain”. I didn’t know anything about it, but it piqued my interest, so I decided to check it out.
Indeed, there is a cross at the top of a hill (I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a mountain), overlooking Fredericksburg, about a mile and a half from downtown. You can get an up-close look at the cross…
by turning onto a small road (marked with a sign on FM 965), then driving to the end and parking. At first glance, it looks like the area is fenced off, but look for the “enter here” sign, and slip through the maze. The hike up the hill follows the dirt road, and just takes a few minutes.
At the top of the hill, you can get a good look at the cross. It’s made somewhat ugly by the screens that have been placed over the light bulbs, but I’m sure the lights look nice at night.
Take a moment to take in the view of the residential neighborhoods around Fredericksburg. As you can see, the mountain isn’t very high above the surrounding landscape — just enough to give you a nice view.
A marker at the foot of the cross remembers Christian Durst. He didn’t erect the first cross here — and it’s unclear who did. But, he’s the one who discovered it. The original cross was lost long ago.
