The journey from Atlanta to Florida is easy — you just hop onto Interstate 75, and drive for hours. The only problem is, it’s not very interesting. So, I plotted a different course for the drive south — one that would, hopefully, avoid the Interstate for a while, and allow me to see some small towns. I took US 19/41 through Jonesboro, Bonanza, Lovejoy, and Hampton, then made my first stop of the day in Griffin, Georgia.
Griffin has a nice stretch of downtown businesses. Sure, it looks desolate in this photo, but that’s only because I was visiting on a Sunday morning.
In fact, it looks like it was 10:15 a.m., on Sunday morning. It might not be a great time for shopping, but it was a nice time to explore on foot, and take pictures.
Head down Hill Street from downtown, and you’ll cross the railroad tracks…
… where there are a collection of old brick buildings, including the old Akins Feed and Seed Company.
Back on the downtown side of the tracks, I found some interesting old churches. This one, on 8th Street, appears to have undergone some rehab in the past few years.
About a block away, this church faces the railroad tracks on Broad Street.
The Pool Room didn’t appear to be any busier than the churches, despite the “open” sign in the window. It’s located on Slaton Avenue — basically, an alley, that allowed me to complete my loop back into town, and return to my car.
