Lake Erie Loop

Grand Bend, Ontario
On Lake Huron

Much to my surprise, there aren't any good views of Lake Huron from Ontario Route 21 and County Road 7 -- the roads that follow the lake's coast, along its southeastern side.  I did, however, find the waterfront in the tiny tourist town of Grand Bend, Ontario.

Grand Bend looks like the quintessential beach town.  Its Main Street stretches a few blocks from Route 21 to the waterfront, passing by dozens of tourist-friendly restaurants and shops.

Main Street ends at a dead-end roundabout.  You can park here and enjoy the beach, or go around the circle and head back through downtown.  During my visit, the streets were packed with people who were obviously headed to the beach -- despite a tremendous storm that was about to blow in, off the lake.

If it hadn't been for that storm, I would have stopped and walked around town.  It turned out, the storm packed quite a wallop, taking down trees and knocking out power throughout the area.  (You can see it arriving, as I drove south from Grand Bend, in the second Drivelapse video on the previous page.)  The storm made the rest of my drive even longer, as I crawled along from Grand Bend to Sarnia, where traffic lights were out and trees were lying in the road.

If you'd prefer to spend time in nature, instead of in a tourist town, check out The Pinery provincial park.  It's just south of Grand Bend, and features the largest oak savanna woodlands remaining in North America, along with sand dunes that stretch out to the water.  Unfortunately, it was far too stormy for me to visit, as I passed by.
