Gunnison, Colorado

The city of Gunnison provides a good home-base for a visit to this area of Colorado. Aside from the charming business district that surrounds the intersection of US 50 and CO 135, Gunnison also offers easy access to the Curecanti National Recreation Area and Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

I visited Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in 2005, so I didn't go there again on this trip. However, if I had, I would have considered taking the Morrow Point Boat Tour -- a 90 minute ride into the canyon. It's probably the best way to see the Black Canyon -- otherwise, you're limited to looking down from viewpoints on the rim. |

If the huge "W" on Tenderfoot Mountain overlooking Gunnison seems a bit larger than most, there's a good reason. Gunnison claims its "W" (for Western State College) is the largest collegiate symbol in the world.

This small park serves as a gathering spot for concerts and other celebrations in the summer months. The fountain is dedicated to the memory of the lives lost in the Columbine High School shooting.
